Four steps, start to finish
Water first, then the rest in order: each stage of the roof priced on its own in a written quote.
Call with what you know
The address, what you are seeing, and, if you want to say, roughly what you can put toward the roof this year.
See all of it
The whole roof walked or viewed, the attic looked at wherever there is a hatch, and every fault found photographed, not just the one you called about.
Rank it
Each fault put in one of three columns: lets water in now, will let water in by next winter, can wait.
Do the first stage properly
The first stage done as a finished job, not a stopgap, then a walk around the house with you before payment, and the remaining stages left on paper for when you are ready.
Each job, priced
Estimated figures for Tazewell County. Nothing here is a quote until we have seen the job.

What to sort out before a roofer arrives, when money is tight
Some of it needs a roofer today. The rest can be planned and priced in stages.
Deal with the water, then take pictures
Pans or buckets wherever it drips, furniture pulled clear, and photos of the ceiling as it is.
Find the roof's age and history
The year it went on, if purchase papers or a previous owner can tell you.
Decide what you can put toward it
You do not have to share a figure, but knowing roughly what this year allows means the quote can be written as stages: what is done now, and what is priced and waiting.
Ask every roofer for the order
Not just a total: which part lets water in, which part can wait a season, which can wait longer, and what each costs.
After a storm, pay for the openings first
Worth knowing before the next one, because storms do not wait for a budget.
When a storm crosses the Peoria area, every roofer's phone rings in the same hour, and the quotes written that week are the most hurried of the year. It is also the week a homeowner is most likely to be handed one large number for the whole roof.
Split it. The openings that let water in are paid for now, because every rain makes them cost more. Damage that will leak later but not yet is written down and priced as a second stage, to be done when the weather settles and the money is there.
- Active leaks covered the same day where light and weather allow
- Temporary cover priced apart from the permanent repair
- Permanent repairs written up in daylight, slope by slope
- Openings first, lesser damage priced as a later stage
